Saving a Version

ActionShortcut
Save Version⌘⇧S
When you save a version, Kern:
  1. Saves the complete project state — all tracks, clips, settings, automation
  2. Creates an audio bounce — a mixdown of your current arrangement in AAC format
  3. Adds a version entry — with timestamp and optional name
Use ⌘S for regular saves (overwrites current file) and ⌘⇧S for versioned saves (creates a new snapshot).

Version History

Access your version history from the sidebar or Command Palette. Each version shows:
  • Name — custom or auto-generated
  • Date — when it was created
  • Preview button — play the audio bounce

Previewing Versions

Click the play button on any version to hear the audio bounce. This lets you quickly compare different versions without loading them.

Loading a Version

Click on a version to load it. If you have unsaved changes, Kern will ask:
  • Save Version — save your current work as a new version, then load
  • Don’t Save — discard current changes and load
  • Cancel — stay on current version
Version history is preserved when loading. You won’t lose access to other versions when you switch.

Workflow Tips

Experiment Freely

Save a version before making major changes. Try something risky — if it doesn’t work, you’re one click away from reverting.

Name Important Versions

Give meaningful names to versions you might want to return to: “pre-drop change”, “client feedback v1”, “final mix”.

Use Audio Previews

Before loading an old version, preview it. Sometimes you just need to hear one section, not load the whole project.
